Why caskets cost what they cost
Almost all of it is the material. Solid copper and solid bronze sit at the top; cloth-covered and plywood caskets sit at the bottom. Interior lining moves the price too — linen, velvet, silk and crepe are not priced alike.
Fiberglass is also available and can pass for wood at a distance. A casket veil, originally there to keep insects and heat off the body, is now purely for appearance at an open-casket service.
Metal caskets
Bronze and copper are the expensive end. Stainless steel is the economical metal, and standard steel — sold by gauge — is cheaper still.
Wood caskets
Wood is generally the pricier route, but pine is one of the most affordable materials of any kind.
The most cost-effective material
It comes down to preference as much as budget. Among woods, pine is the cheapest by a distance. Among metals, skip bronze and copper and look at stainless steel.
What you should expect to pay
An average casket lands somewhere around $2,000. Mahogany and similar can run to $10,000 or more. Ours start at $995.
Decide your ceiling before you start looking — it is the single most effective thing you can do to avoid overspending.
Buy direct, not from the funeral home
Federal law is on your side. The FTC's Funeral Rule requires a funeral home to accept a casket bought from a third party, and to hand you an itemized price list if you ask for one — which is how you find out what their own caskets are marked up to.
Buying online also widens the field. Caskets are manufactured in the United States, Mexico and China, though only around 2% of caskets made in China are sold in the US. Read more about your rights.

Do I have to buy my casket from the funeral home?
No. You do not have to purchase your casket from the funeral home. The Funeral Rule, a law designed to protect consumers, specifies that your funeral home is required to accept a casket from a third party seller.
Why are your caskets priced so much lower than at the funeral home?
We get our inventory from an independent manufacturer. We also do not have the high overhead of a funeral home, therefore we are able to offer supreme discounts on our products.
How quickly can you deliver a casket to me?
It depends which shipping you choose. Expedited is 2–4 business days — usually 2 to a major city, and often next day in the tri-state area. Standard is 7–10 business days. Both are flat rates quoted before you order, and business days exclude weekends and holidays.

What is the difference between 18-gauge and 20-gauge caskets?
18 Gauge is about 30% thicker metal than the 20 gauge caskets. Obviously the thicker caskets cost more. Your car is around 18-gauge metal. 20-gauge is about the thickness of your license plate. Our 18-gauge caskets weigh 210 pounds and our 20-gauge caskets weigh 170 pounds. We sell mostly the thicker 18-gauge.
How do I know if I'll need an oversized casket?
Caskets come in different widths. If a man is less than 240 pounds or a woman is less than 200 pounds they will usually fit in a standard 24″ or 23.5″ inside width. We have other caskets that are 25.5″, 26″, 27.5″ and 28″ wide inside which also fit in a standard vault.
